Debate Skills
Disagree well.
A good debate isn't about shouting the loudest, having the last word or making the other person look stupid.
It's about having an idea, being able to explain it, listening to a different perspective and being prepared to change your mind when the evidence demands it.
This workshop explores the skills behind a good debate — from building an argument to thinking on your feet.
Participants will explore how to:
- build a clear and convincing argument
- distinguish evidence from opinion
- listen and respond to opposing viewpoints
- ask effective questions
- identify weaknesses in an argument
- challenge ideas without attacking people
- think on their feet
- speak with confidence
- use evidence and examples effectively
- recognise when an argument needs reconsidering
Activities and discussion give participants the opportunity to put these skills into practice, explore different perspectives and discover that changing your mind isn't losing — it's thinking.
Flexible format
Debate Skills can be delivered as a standalone workshop or developed into a six-week course, depending on your needs.
Sessions can be delivered online or in person and tailored to the age, experience and interests of your group or organisation.
Who is it for?
Schools, colleges, youth groups, community organisations and groups who want to develop confident speakers, thoughtful listeners and people who can disagree constructively.
The best debaters aren't the ones who always win. They're the ones who know when they've got something to learn.
